Police Shoot School Girl During Games

A high school girl was on Friday shot by prison warders from Migori GK Prison who were pursuing a runaway prisoner in the County.

The student of St Albert's Girls High School, Ulanda, was hit in the head by a stray bullet while watching the Lake Region handball games at Migori Boys Secondary School.

The girl was rushed to St Joseph’s Ombo Catholic hospital and later referred to Kisii Level Five hospital for specialized treatment.

Several students were also reportedly injured during the pursuit to nab the naked prisoner.

The shooting caused a frenzy at the institution with students and teachers from various schools scampering for safety.

Angry Migori residents staged a demonstration at the County police headquarters to condemn the unfortunate occurrence.

Addressing the enraged crowd, County Commander David Kirui stated that the concerned warders would be held responsible for the act.

“The prison warders have become a serious letdown. Why fire bullets into students when chasing a prisoner?” Kirui questioned.

“We have already launched high –level investigations into the conduct of prison warders working here. Am particularly disappointed by their conduct,” he added.

The incident comes days after warders from the same facility shot five protesters during the latest CORD demonstrations against the IEBC.
