Police in Samburu County are puzzled at how unidentified individuals broke into a police post at night, scoured through the armoury and walked away with ammunition.

The incident took place at Kirimon Police Post, under Suguta Marmar Police Station in Samburu West, on Monday, October 25. According to a report filed at the same station, the raid was conducted at 9:30pm in the police quarters.

According to the police, the thugs had camped in the nearby thickets from the early hours of the evening waiting for the darkness in order to strike.

On the other end, the law enforcers retired to the comfort of their beds, unsuspecting of the well-timed raid

The suspects stealthily crept into the post, walked past the gate, the station and into the police lines where the armoury was located.

Ironically, the armoury also turned out to be a policeman’s house. His colleagues painted him as a reckless officer who usually broke into his own house whenever he lost the keys.

His neighbour, a police constable, was awakened by a commotion next door. He sat still and waited to hear the sergeant’s voice. As usual, he may have lost his key.

“At first, he thought the sergeant was the one breaking in because he had done so several times after losing his keys. He then heard a gunshot and peeped through the door. The PC did not see any movement,” the police report reads.

The PC followed his instincts, got out of his house and proceeded to the armoury and the neighbour’s house.

On arrival, he found the door to the room where the steel box was kept broken into. The box, which was open, had been wiped clean.

“He found out that two G3 firearms and two magazines with 40 rounds of ammunition were missing,” the police report read.

Detectives from Samburu Central and Suguta Marmar Officer Commanding Police Station (OCS) were alerted of the incident and visited the scene and immediately processed it.

It was established that the sergeant living in the armoury was not present that night. He alleged that he had rushed home and had left the arsenal in the hands of two other officers at the post.

The two were also missing. Thus the armoury was unguarded. One officer claimed that he was on duty from 6am to 5:56pm on the said day before he handed over to his colleague.

The second officer, however, argued that he never reported to work, was not on duty on the said day and never took over from his colleague.

“One spent cartridge was recovered outside the post. A broken padlock and door latch were kept as exhibits,” the police report added.
