Motorists plying the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway have been stuck in traffic for over 7 hours.
Travellers heading to Mombasa noted that starting at 3 am on Tuesday, April 16, motorists had been caught in a traffic snarl-up following an accident involving 3 vehicles.
It was noted that the traffic jam was heaviest around the Tsavo area and stretched through to Mtito Andei.
The most affected were long-distance vehicles and trucks. Motorists on site reported that multiple teachers heading to Mombasa for a retreat also found themselves stranded alongside other motorists.
"Jam on Mtito Andei forced teachers to engage in physical exercises to kick out fatigue on their way to Mombasa for a short vacation," Moi Kapsowar Girls' School noted in its statement.
Following the delays, bus companies have also been forced to reschedule trips for the day.
Kenyans planning to travel today have been advised to consult with the respective transport service providers before making any bookings for the day.
"Due to the heavy traffic snarl up at Tsavo area, there will delays in arrivals both from upcountry and Nairobi.
"For those travelling to upcountry today afternoon schedules, you will be notified should there be any changes in the reporting and departure time through SMS and calls via our customer care hotlines," read a statement by a bus company plying the route.
At the time of publication, normalcy was yet to be restored with other vehicles opting to overlap, a move that worsened the situation.
Notably, this is not the first time that the highway has experienced such delays with the government also planning on dualling the highway to mitigate such issues.
Dualling is set to commence in the 2026/2027 Financial Year and will be achieved through a Public Private Partnership (PPP).
