Airtel Kenya has introduced Airtel Lite, a new Progressive Web App (PWA) designed to provide customers with a faster and more accessible self-care experience.

The lightweight application launched on Tuesday, February 11, aims to cater to smartphone users struggling with limited storage space and processing power, offering an efficient alternative to the My Airtel self-care app.

The launch of Airtel Lite coincides with the zero-rating of the My Airtel App, allowing customers to use both platforms without incurring data charges. This move is expected to enhance digital accessibility for users who have traditionally relied on USSD services due to concerns over data consumption.

According to the telecommunications company, the new app will solve the headache of storage space that has long been a challenge for many Kenyans, particularly those using entry-level smartphones.

Airtel Lite eliminates this issue by requiring zero storage space on devices. Unlike conventional apps that need installation, this PWA allows customers to access key Airtel services directly through a web browser.

The company says the new app will require zero data, just like the My Airtel App, users can access the platform without needing mobile data bundles, an essential feature for those conscious of internet costs.

The new app also comes with a quick-loading interface is another key advantage, addressing the needs of users who prioritise speed and efficiency. This is how it works.

The new app eliminates the need to download large amounts of data, enabling seamless access to essential services, including balance checks, airtime recharge, bundle purchases, and mobile money transactions.

During the launch, Airtel Kenya Managing Director Ashish Malhotra emphasised the company’s commitment to addressing customer challenges.

“Our research revealed that many Kenyans still face challenges such as limited storage space and data usage in the use of their smartphones. Airtel Lite is our innovative solution, designed to remove these barriers and ensure a seamless, accessible digital experience for all,” Malhotra stated.

The app offers a modern and intuitive experience without requiring users to abandon familiar services.

“Airtel Lite is a gateway to digital empowerment for millions of Kenyans. By ensuring that every customer, no matter their device, can access our services, we are making sure that no one is left behind in the country’s digital transformation journey,” Malhotra added.
