Friend’s Advice That Forced Me to Re-learn Banking

The life of a corporate woman is never an easy one. Ask anyone.

You have to be the first to wake up, cook for the family, warm their bathwater, wake up the kids, make sure they are well fed and ready for school, clean after them and then get out and start the day on an equal footing with everyone else.

Don’t get me wrong. It is not that I am complaining. I am already used to this routine, as a matter of fact, I feel empty without it now that the kids and I are all over each other’s space working from home.

When it was directed that we limit the handling of physical cash in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was at a loss, because to me it is a religion to go to the bank almost every last Friday of the month to deposit the Sacco cash.

I was even more concerned because the trips to the bank are also courtesy of my good friend Maria who went abroad for further studies but sends her contributions to me.

With the deadline fast approaching, I reached out to Maria half afraid that she would misinterpret my call as opting out of our arrangement, but she instead burst into a frenzied laugh.

“I am not even in the country but I already know this. Who told you that you need to carry cash in your bag all the way to the bank and back? Is that what you have been doing?”

I was tempted to say ‘no’, but the cat was already out of the bag. It was time to be humble and learn from the guru who was still in stitches from the not-so-funny joke.

To be honest, before she enlightened me, I did not know that it was possible to simply transfer money to and from my Co-operative Bank Account or Sacco account from the comfort of my phone using the MCo-op Cash app.

All this time I had risked meeting robbers aware of what I was carrying in my red handbag as I ran from street to street to get the money delivered in time, yet I could have done it from the comfort of my office?

I have never felt this wasted in life. I felt grateful, however, that she had saved me from making the long queues in the banks, especially at a time when the government is calling for social distancing.

Even when this nightmare comes to an end, I will be practising social distancing by transacting using the MCo-op Cash app, and saving time for better things like baking and also learning to code.

Now that I will be working from home for the foreseeable future, at least I can take comfort in the fact that I can still buy, sell, transfer shares and even apply for a loan and pay for it from the comfort of my home.

With the kids home, I am also happy that I can pay for the TV subscriptions to keep them entertained and safe and also ensure that the internet is running so that I can work effectively.

Life need not be too hard unless you are choosing to make it so yourself.

With M-coop cash, you can transact straight from your phone by simply dialling *667# or via the MCo-op Cash App.
