Following the unprecedented effects of Covid-19 on the economy, Airtel Kenya has moved to cushion customers by offering a 5% cashback on airtime purchases that can be resold.

Airtel customers can be community champions by getting 5% cashback as airtime via MyAirtel App and USSD (*222#) options whenever they buy airtime for themselves or their friends and families.

The extra airtime can then be sold via ME2U service of sharing airtime to another user or USSD *140# options.

The service is open to all current Airtel prepaid customers and is even open to new customers who join the network.

Airtel Kenya Managing Director, Prasanta Das Sarma noted that the telecommunications services provider is moving to cushion its customers during the tough times.

"With the prevailing circumstances, we are happy to offer more to our customers by giving them extra airtime while they make purchases for others and also allowing them to earn more money through selling of airtime from the convenience of our Airtel App.

"We hope that through this service all our customers will stay connected with their friends and families," stated Das Sarma.

The service can be best illustrated by a boda boda rider who can purchase airtime for his colleagues or passengers and with every purchase, he gets the 5% cashback as airtime.

He can further sell it to others and get to earn extra cash. This not only helps him and those in his community to meet their communication needs but also be able to meet their basic needs.

This means that if the rider purchased airtime worth Ksh1,000 he will get a Ksh50 credit cashback which he can then sell, earning an extra Ksh50 on his airtime purchase.

This new service is being driven through the ‘Kuwa Shujaa wa Mtaa’ brand campaign that emphasizes on Airtel customers being heroes in their communities by ensuring that they remain connected through the availability of airtime.

The revamped MyAirtel App offers customers a variety of benefits including the convenience of seamless access to products, services and information as well as the opportunity to get extra airtime and making money by selling airtime to other Airtel customers.

Airtel continues to innovate through its products and services as well as work with other partners to help customers meet their communication needs during the Covid-19 pandemic period.
