Two people on Tuesday were arrested for possessing a firearm that was stolen from a police car at Jogoo Road Police Station in Kamukunji, Nairobi County, in August.
An earlier report filed with the police indicated that the rifle was stolen after a police officer left his car at the entrance of Jogoo Road Police Station to engage his colleagues at the desk.
Upon returning, the officer realised that his Ceska pistol loaded with 15 rounds, handcuff, Motorola smartphone, and a feature phone were missing from his car with no sign of being broken into.
According to a police report seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the said police officer recorded a statement at the police station immediately.
“At about 20:23hours while (the unnamed police officer) was on post-visit when he was informed by a colleague of Hamza police post that, today at noon he alleged to have parked his saloon car at the entrance of the post,” read a statement recorded on Occurrence Book (OB) on August 23.
Following preliminary investigations, a suspect was arrested and escorted to Buruburu Police Station to assist in the investigation.
The rifle was discovered by children playing football near Muthurwa Police Station and their parents reported the matter to the police station immediately.
“It was reported to incharge Muthurwa police post Ip Samson Maroa by children who were playing football near Railway house block B, that there was a firearm hidden under a kiosk within the estate about 900 metres East of the station,” read part of the report.
The scene was visited by the OCS of Kamukunji, DCI officers, and other officers upon which the missing firearm was recovered with live ammunition intact.
The recovery was a result of members of the public who volunteered information that helped security agencies trace the rifle.
Eyewitnesses reported that they saw two known persons suspiciously hiding something at the said kiosk near the playing field.
Following the tip the suspects were traced and arrested. The scene was cordoned as a crime scene. Suspects were placed in custody awaiting to be arraigned in court for the offence of being illegally in possession of a firearm.
