Video clips seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed that the bus had overturned after the collision while the truck head was in an upside position with crowds milling by the roadside.

Following the accident, motorists have been advised to exercise caution and expect possible delays along the section of the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

The accident came barely a month after another bus operated by the same company whose bus was involved in the accident got a mishap in Nairobi near GPO.

In the accident that took place on October 21, there were no fatalities with only a handful of passengers on board who escaped without major injuries.

Following the incident, a rescue bus was sent to pick up the stranded passengers to proceed to their destination in Mombasa.

The Nairobi-Mombasa Highway is a critical transport route in Kenya but it has also been the site of numerous accidents, often resulting in fatalities and injuries.

The highway has been identified as one of the most dangerous roads in Kenya, with a high rate of road traffic fatalities (RTF). The country experiences approximately 28 RTF per 100,000 people.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority Act (NTSA), over two thousand people lost their lives on Kenyan roads in just six months this year, from January to July 7, 2024. Similarly, over 10,166 other people including motorists and pedestrians nursed injuries from an estimated 11,502 crashes.

NTSA estimates that 3,000 people die in road accidents every year, with many of the accidents occurring on weekends, during festivities, and public holidays. The hours between 5 pm and 8 am are considered the peak time for accidents, with drink-driving and carelessness cited as some of the main causes of the carnage.
