The Japanese government has awarded Benson Ogutu, the former Kenyan Ambassador to Japan, the 'Order of the Rising Sun, and Gold and Silver Stars', one of the highest honors in Japan.

In an official statement by the Japanese Embassy to Kenya on Wednesday, the Japanese government revealed that Ogutu was awarded on Tuesday, April 29.

Ogutu received the award for his significant contribution to strengthening bilateral relations between Kenya and Japan during his tenure as the ambassador from 2012 to 2020, when he was appointed as Kenya's ambassador to Moscow.

''The Government of Japan announced on April 29th that the Government has conferred a decoration, The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, on Ambassador Benson H.O. Ogutu,'' the statement read in part.

''Former Ambassador of Kenya to Japan for his invaluable contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and promoting friendship between Japan and the Republic of Kenya,'' the Embassy continued.

The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, is a prestigious Japanese decoration awarded by the Emperor of Japan.

The Gold and Silver Star is a principal grade, ranking just below the Grand Cordon, meaning that Ogutu has received one of the most distinguished honors Japan bestows on foreign dignitaries.

It recognises individuals who have made distinguished contributions to Japan in various fields, including culture, diplomacy, and international relations.

With the award, Ogutu, who currently serves as Kenya's Ambassador to Moscow, has signified the diplomatic relations between Kenya and Japan.

This honor strengthens Kenya-Japan relations by recognising his contributions to bilateral cooperation, which could lead to enhanced diplomatic ties, increased opportunities, cultural exchange, and a boost to global diplomatic standing.

Apart from Ogutu, other Kenyans who have won this award before include Ambassador Dennis Awori, who was honored with the same decoration in 2021 for his contributions to strengthening Kenya-Japan relations during his tenure.

Renowned Kenya marathoner Douglas Wakiihuri also received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays for his role in fostering sports and cultural ties between Kenya and Japan.

Currently, Kenya and Japan share a strong and growing diplomatic relationship, marked by infrastructure development, economic cooperation, and defense collaboration.
