The Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB) has announced that it will conduct a compliance assessment in 10 counties this month.

In a statement, the board confirmed that the exercise will be conducted from Monday, May 12, to Friday, May 23, by two teams.

According to KVB, the first team will conduct an assessment in Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya, and Kisumu counties, while the second team will conduct an assessment in Embu, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Meru, and Nyeri counties.

"The Kenya Veterinary Board will conduct a veterinary practice compliance assessment from 12th May to 23rd May 2025. The assessment will be conducted by two teams across various counties," it stated.

The board has noted that veterinary in these counties will be needed to show a valid 2025 practice licence, retention card, and a Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) licence.

Additionally, according to the board, the practitioners will be required to have a lockable cabinet for prescription-only medicines and a prescription file.

"All practitioners are requested to comply in time to avoid any inconvenience. All payments are done through E-citizen as provided in detail on our website. For more information, kindly reach out through any of the channels below," it stated.

The announcement comes days after the board, in a statement on Tuesday, April 22, issued a warning against the employment of unlicensed veterinary doctors, noting that the employment of such individuals contravenes the law.

According to the board, employers caught employing an unlicensed veterinary surgeon or veterinary paraprofessional will be liable, on conviction, to a fine not exceeding Ksh100,000 or to imprisonment for at least one year, or both.

KVB cautioned the public against practising as veterinarians unless they are registered and licensed by the government.

According to KVB, any individual whose name does not appear in the relevant register after March 31 every year will be deemed to be unregistered under the Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Paraprofessionals Act.

"No person shall practice or hold himself out, whether directly or indirectly, as practising or being able to practice as a veterinary surgeon or veterinary paraprofessional or to take up employment as such unless he is registered and licensed," it stated.
