Kajiado West MP George Sunkuyia has been arrested over allegations of forging a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate.
The lawmaker was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
According to EACC, Sunkuyia is currently undergoing processing before his arraignment in court over the alleged offence.
Sunkuyia was first elected to parliament in 2017 and re-elected in 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.
Before his tenure in the National Assembly, Sunkuyia served as the councillor for the Olkejuado County Council, a position he held from 2002 to 2013. He also served as an MCA for Keekonyokie ward from 2013 to 2017.
His arrest is the latest in a series of cases involving public officials accused of forging academic documents.
In February 2025, Juja MP George Ndung’u Koimburi was arraigned before a Kiambu court over allegations of forging academic documents. He faced six charges, three related to forgery and three for presenting false documents.
Koimburi was accused of forging a KCSE certificate between November and December 1994 and two certificates from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). He pleaded not guilty to all charges and was released on a Ksh 200,000 cash bail.
In June 2024, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi was acquitted of all charges in a case where he was accused of forging his academic documents.
The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove its case and that the investigation was conducted irregularly.
These cases highlight the EACC's ongoing efforts to combat the use of fake academic certificates in public service. In January 2025, the commission arraigned five public officials on various charges related to the forgery of academic certificates used to secure employment and promotions.
