A fire broke out on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 4, in the Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums, leaving about 100 families without homes.
Videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed the iron sheet houses engulfed by fire as it razed through the houses.
According to reports, the fire started at around 2pm and is believed to have been caused by a gas cylinder that was leaking in one of the houses.
By the time of publishing this story, the number of casualties, if any, was yet to be established.
This is not the first time a fire has broken out in the area. On Sunday, December 8, a similar fire incident happened in the Wapewape zone of Mukuru Kwa Njenga.
The Mukuru Community Justice Centre said that emergency responders and volunteers were quickly on the scene to try and put out the flames.
"Happening now at mukuru Kwa Njenga Wapewape zone. The fire brigade and community volunteers are on site to put off the fire," the post read.
These incidents come just weeks after another deadly fire in Mathare B slums on May 19. That fire started around 2am and spread quickly through iron-sheet houses.
Nairobi police boss George Sedah confirmed that five people died in their sleep and four others were seriously injured and taken to the hospital.
“We understand the victims were sleeping when the fire broke out, killing five of them. Four others are in the hospital with serious injuries,” Sedah stated.
That fire also destroyed eight houses and two churches. Firefighters faced difficulties reaching the area because of the narrow paths in the slum.
Despite having five fire engines and help from volunteers, the fire caused a lot of damage before it was controlled.
Fires remain a big risk in many of Nairobi’s informal settlements, where homes are built close together and emergency access is limited.
