The Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) has warned the public against a College in Mogotio Town in Baringo County, which is offering unauthorised nursing courses.
In a public notice on Wednesday, June 18, NCK claimed that the college, which has one branch, has been advertising and purporting to offer Nurse Aid, Nursing Assistant, and Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), which are not recognised by the council.
"It has come to our attention that African International Technical College is advertising and purporting to offer a nursing-related course without the necessary approval from the NCK," it stated.
"Any course offered without the NCK's approval is not recognised and does not meet the required standards of training and professional practice.NCK wishes to further notify the entire public that Nurse Aid, Nursing Assistant, and Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) training are not recognised programmes by the Nursing Council of Kenya," it added.
According to the NCK, anyone caught conducting unauthorised nursing training risks a fine not exceeding Ksh500,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.
On the other hand, the Council has urged the public to verify the accreditation status of any nursing institution before enrolling in any nursing or midwifery programme.
Kenyans can access the list of approved institutions and programmes by visiting the council's official website at nckenya.com/approved-training-institutions.
"The information herein is solely to caution the public. The Council will, however, not be held responsible for any damages arising in contract, tort, or otherwise from the use or inability to use the information contained herein, or from any action or decision taken as a result of using the said information," the Council stated.
This comes after another popular college in Pipeline Estate, Embakasi, came under scrutiny in April for luring students into paying tuition fees for tens of courses that are not recognised by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA).
The college has only two licensed branches, one in Pipeline and the other at Bee Centre in Umoja Estate, and offers only 14 accredited programmes, according to reports.
The college, which offers some high-demand courses such as mortuary science, theatre technology, and ICT, charges fairly inexpensive fee rates, a factor that compelled learners to enrol.
Students from the college came out to complain about underqualified instructors and the failure of the institution to issue exam transcripts despite completing several semesters.
