A group of masked and armed men, moving in a fleet of Subaru vehicles and allegedly opening fire in Kiserian, Ngong, and Kitengela during the Saba Saba Day protests, belongs to the National Intelligence Service (NIS), according to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Addressing the press on Wednesday afternoon, Gachagua alleged that the officers whom he called a 'killer squad' operate under the leadership of the Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), Noordin Haji, and consist of 101 well-trained officers.

According to him, the killer squad was dispatched during the recent Saba Saba protests to deal with dissenting voices. He noted that the special team moved around in unmarked Subarus, shooting aimlessly at protesting Kenyans.

He further disclosed that the elite unit was formed while he was the deputy president and that the officers were recruited from the Administration Police Unit for special training on abduction.

"This special squad in Subarus are disguising themselves as DCI officers, yet they are not. I would like to clarify that the NIS has procured Subarus to give the impression that the killer squad is from the DCI," Gachagua alleged.

“The truth of the matter is that this squad has nothing to do with the DCI. This squad of 101 people was forced while I was still in government. Officers were recruited from the Administration Police unit for special training,” he added.

During the presser, Gachagua revealed that during the Saba Saba demonstrations, the special squad was mostly deployed in the Mt Kenya region and other regions not perceived to be friendly to the current regime.

Gachagua also accused President Ruto of allegedly hiring goons to destroy and loot people's businesses, particularly in the Central Kenya region, where he claims goons were dispatched hours before the July 7 protests.

The former DP alleged that the state-sponsored goons were strategically placed and ordered to operate under the supervision of the National Police Service (NPS).

While condemning the use of sponsored goons to destroy the property of innocent Kenyans, Gachagua termed the deployment of goons as an act of economic sabotage to the country's economy.

"On the fateful day, this state-sponsored militia, under the instruction of the police, was dropped in different places in the country and mostly in the Mt Kenya region," Gachagua claimed.

He added, "The militia was strategically dropped past midnight, and then roadblocks were erected by the police. They were procured by Ruto, Governors, and MPs allied to him," he added.
