City businessman and TikToker Kakan Maiyo has been released on a Ksh10,000 police bond.

The release came days after a dramatic arrest by plain-clothed detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, who stormed into the office and forcefully apprehended him.

His lawyers, led by Law Society of Kenya Vice President Mwaura Kabata, on Friday, July 11, sought for the case to be dropped since there were no charges against the TikToker.

According to the TikToker's lawyers, the DCI officers had yet to arraign him in court, despite previously claiming that he would be presented at the Kahawa Law Courts.

The lawyers accused the DCI of totally infringing the TikToker's rights.

''The DCI failed to arraign him in court despite claiming that he would be presented at Kahawa Law Courts. This is a total infringement on his rights,'' the lawyer said in a press statement.

According to reports, hours before his release, Maiyo was allegedly taken to the Milimani Law Courts, but he was not arraigned. He was then returned to the  Muthaiga Police Station, where he was released on Ksh10,000 police bond.

A police bond is a form of temporary release granted to a person who has been arrested, allowing them to remain free while awaiting their court appearance. A police bond is usually issued at the police station.

Kakan, popularly referred to as Kan, had been arrested following a viral video in which he is alleged to have incited violence against police officers and their families.

Maiyo is a prominent figure on social media, especially TikTok, where he uses the platform to call out government failures and police brutality. He also uses the platform to market his logistics company.

Although DCI did not identify the specific video that led to his arrest, a recent video on his TikTok he implored the DCI officers to stop the abductions of unarmed Kenyans and refuse to be used by higher powers.

He further urged them to think of their own families, including their children, brothers, and sisters, when sent to "abduct Kenyans" for their activism. He also has other videos commenting on recent happenings, including the death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody.
