The National Land Commission (NLC) has revealed that it is in the process of acquiring private land to pave the way for the construction of the Rongo weighbridge along the Kisii-Isebania road in Migori County.
The NLC Chairman, Gershom Otachi, through a gazette notice, claimed that the acquisition of the land will be done on behalf of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), which will oversee the construction of the weighbridge.
According to the notice, four plots of land, cumulatively 0.7352 hectares, which have been targeted for acquisition, are located in the Kamagambo/Kabuoro area, and are registered under three companies, all under one individual.
The weighbridge aims to elevate the infrastructural capacity of the county, in addition to reinforcing transport regulation. NLC did not, however, mention when the construction of the weighbridge will begin.
"In pursuance of the Land Act, No.6 of 2012, Part VIII, the National Land Commission on behalf of Kenya National Highways Authority gives notice that the National Government intends to acquire parcels of land listed below for construction of Rongo Weighbridge Station along Kisii – Isebania (A1) Road in Migori County," the notice read.
According to Otachi, the public is free to inspect the plans for the affected at the NLC offices in Nairobi, or the NLC's County Coordinators' Offices in Migori County during working hours.
"Plans for the affected land may be inspected during office hours at the office of the National Land Commission, Ardhi House 3rd Floor, Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue, Nairobi, and at the National Land Commission’s County Co-ordinator’s Office in Migori County," the notice stated.
Weighbridges, also known as truck scales, are large-scale weighing systems and are used to determine the weight of vehicles, including their cargo. These scales are instrumental in ensuring compliance with weight regulations.
The bridges are typically located at places where heavy vehicles are frequently weighed for various purposes, including truck stops, trucking terminals, quarries, landfills, ports, and major highways.
Earlier this year, the Transport Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir, revealed that the government is in the process of increasing the number of weighbridges across the country in a bid to elevate transport efficiency.
The CS in a notice on Monday, February 17, said that the government is introducing 28 additional weighbridges across the roads, which will include virtual and static stations.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by regulation 9(2) of the Kenya Roads (Kenya National Highways Authority) Regulations, 2013, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport increases the number of installed weighbridges set out in Part II of the Schedule of the Regulations, with the weighbridges set out in the Schedule hereto," the notice read.
