Another Kenyan activist has reportedly been abducted in Tanzania, barely weeks after six other Kenyan activists, including Boniface Mwangi, were detained in the same country.
While confirming the incident on Friday morning, Vocal Africa Chief Executive Officer Hussein Khalid revealed that Mwabili Mwagodi was allegedly abducted on Wednesday, July 21, by unknown individuals in the neighbouring country.
Mwagodi, who has been living partly in Tanzania in recent months, has been vocal against churches receiving donations from politicians. He recently launched a campaign dubbed Occupy the Church, targeting rogue preachers.
Khalid revealed that he learnt of Mwagodi's abduction through a family member who contacted him directly about the activist's whereabouts.
The Vocal Africa boss, while announcing Mwagodi's alleged abduction, criticised President Samia Suluhu's administration for reportedly targeting Kenyan activists without justification.
"A Kenyan has been abducted in Tanzania. Again. Family has confirmed that Mwabili Mwagodi, who is a Kenyan activist and was vocal against church donations, was abducted in Tanzania on Wednesday," said Khalid.
"It seems Samia Suluhu and her government are working around the clock to target Kenyan activists. Free Mwabili Mwagodi now," he added.
Commenting on the matter, Mwagodi's wife disclosed that her husband went missing on Wednesday at around 10 p.m., on his way to Dar es Salaam.
According to her, Mwagodi left his car behind and opted to use public transport to Dar es Salaam, where he works for a hospitality company.
It was during his journey to the city that his phone went off. Attempts by his wife to reach him by phone were unsuccessful, raising concerns over a possible abduction.
Before his relocation to Tanzania, Mwabili previously worked as a hotelier in Mombasa, where he kicked off his campaign against the tendency by preachers to invite politicians to their churches.
Mwabili, just like his fellow activists, has been critical of President William Ruto's administration. In 2024, he travelled from Mombasa to Nyahururu to rally the youth against the defunct Finance Bill 2024.
