Kenya National Examination Council(KNEC) has issued directives for the nomination of the Grade 9 learners with talents in arts and sports to be placed in the Arts and Sports Science Pathway in senior schools.
The council urged learning institutions to submit the Grade 9 learners' details before October 17, 2025.
According to the KNEC, Chief Executive Officer, David Njengere, the nomination process is due to preparation for the rollout of Senior school pathways under the Competency Based Curriculum, which will begin in January 2026.
As part of the nomination requirements, the Council directed schools to nominate learners who have demonstrated potential in areas such as Visual Arts, Sports, Theatre, and Music and Dance.
The nomination tool has, however, been provided by the Ministry of Education to guide teachers in facilitating the nomination and selection process.
To facilitate the process, the Ministry developed a Nomination Tool to guide teachers during the selection process. Nominations must reflect learners’ abilities objectively and should only focus on those with exceptional potential in the specified areas.
Grade 9 Learners Submission Process
To make submissions online, Schools are required to visit the nomination portal using their school code in both username and password.
After logging in and reviewing the instructions in the user manual provided on the platform, one can change the password.
The schools should put all the required nominated learners' details through the online nomination form before the end of the submission date.
Schools are urged to review all the instructions in the nomination form before submitting to ensure that the information given are compliant and accurate.
According to the Council, the required documents to be submitted include evidence of performances, productions and exhibitions(the records of completion and awards), and Originality of Works and presentations.
There are three senior school pathways provided by the ministry that guide learners' placement based on potential, achievement and aspirations demonstrated. These are Social Sciences, Arts and Sports Science and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
