The highway has, in recent days, become notorious for fatal accidents, with safety concerns raised over the nature of the road, reckless driving, and congestion along the stretch.

The incident comes days after motorists and thousands of travellers using the Nakuru-Nairobi highway were stranded last Friday near Gilgil after an accident triggered a major traffic snarl-up on the busy highway.

Several vehicles, including a truck, were involved in the crash between Kikopey and St Mary’s Mission Hospital. The truck overturned, completely blocking the highway and bringing movement to a standstill.

In yet another tragic turn of events, an ambulance ferrying a patient was involved in a crash on Saturday night, killing all six on board.

The aftermath of the accident was a mangled wreck that claimed the lives of everyone on board instantly.

On Sunday night, yet another crash occurred in the area, claiming the lives of 13 people on the spot.

By Monday, the number of fatalities had hit 16 after additional people succumbed to their injuries.
