Alan Kamau Kimani, a 40-year-old man, died in police custody in Migori County just days after his arrest.
He was reportedly arrested on September 25 for allegedly cutting down trees and taken to Komomwamu Police Post in Kuria West, Migori County.
Commenting on the matter, Hussein Khalid, CEO of VOCAL Africa, confirmed that he received a call from Kimani's mother informing him of the incident and asking for his intervention.
Kimani’s mother, Mary Wambui, said that a police officer had called her to inform her of her son's arrest before she went to the station to see him.
Khalid said that Kimani’s mother claimed that she was asked to part with Ksh15,000 to have Kimani released, an amount she did not have.
Wambui said that the day after her son was arrested, she received a call from a police officer who allegedly threatened her with dire consequences if she failed to pay the bail.
