National Police Service Announces Postponement of Mass Recruitment After Court Ruling

The National Police Service has indefinitely suspended the planned police recruitment exercise that was set to begin on Friday, October 3.

In a statement on Thursday, the NPS revealed the recruitment had been postponed to a later date after interim conservatory orders by Employment and Labour Relations Court.

"In accordance with the Order of the Employment and Labour Relations Court, issued on 2nd October 2025 in Petition No. E196 of 2025 (Harun Mwau v. Inspector General of Police, the National Police Service Commission & 2 Others), the police recruitment exercise scheduled to commence on 3rd October 2025 has been postponed until further notice," an NPS statement read.

On Thursday, Lady Justice Hellen Wasilwa issued interim orders halting the recruitment after a petition was filed challenging the entire process.

In her ruling, Justice Wasilwa directed respondents, including the National Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of police, to file their responses within seven days.

The petitioner will also have seven days to file a further affidavit and written submission.

While the NPS did not reveal when the recruitment would resume, the body confirmed that they were pursuing legal avenues to  

"The National Police Service, in conjunction with the National Police Service Commission, is actively pursuing appropriate legal remedies to ensure the recruitment exercise can resume at the earliest opportunity," the statement went on. 

The recruitment exercises sought to enlist 10,000 police officers and was initually scheduled to run from October 3 to October 9 across all counties.

A day before the court issued interim orders, the NPS and NPSC held a joint briefing on the recruitment of police constables at the National Police College Embakasi 'A' Campus.

It was at this briefing that IG Kanja reiterated his commitment to conducting a credible and transparent recruitment process.
