The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party candidate, Boyd Were, was declared the winner in the hotly contested Kasipul Parliamentary seat on Friday, November 28.
This is after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that Boyd garnered 16,819 votes against his independent Counterpart, Philip Aroko, who came second with 8,476 votes.
Aroko was closely followed by Robert Riga, also known as Money Bior, who ran on an independent ticket and emerged as the first runner-up.
According to IEBC, a total of ten candidates participated in the Kasipul parliamentary elections held on Thursday, November 27.
The Kasipul Constituency By-Election Returning Officer, Rebecca Abwaku, has declared Boyd Ongondo Were of the ODM Party the duly elected Member of the National Assembly for Kasipul Constituency after garnering 16,819 votes. Philip Aroko, an Independent candidate, finished second after securing 8,476 votes," IEBC announced.
"The Commission would like to thank our voters and stakeholders for their participation and support in the November elections. EBC would also like to recognise and appreciate our election officials for their dedication," it added.
Other candidates who also took part in the elections include Sam Okoth from the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Linda Aoko Ouma (Independent), Isaac Kiche Abok (Independent), Omondi Ko’yoo of the National Liberal Party (NLP), Jesse Okello (Independent), and Robert Ouko.
The voting took place across 142 polling stations in five wards, including Central Kasipul, West Kamagak, South Kasipul, West Kasipul and East Kamagak.
Boyd is set to replace his father, Ong'ondo Were, who passed away on April 30, 2025, after being shot by unknown assailants in Nairobi.
His win cements the party's presence in the region, a victory that adds to the number of ODM lawmakers in the Nyanza region, a backyard historically known to support the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
During his campaigns, Boyd received commanding backing from several senior ODM party members, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and MP Peter Kaluma.
Speaking moments after clinching the win, Boyd commended the residents of Kasipul for voting him in, expressing his commitment to building on unity, respect for one another, and a shared commitment to progress.
"I am profoundly grateful to the residents of Kasipul for placing their trust in my vision, believing in my Development Agenda, and granting me the privilege to serve as your Member of Parliament," Boyd said.
Adding, "Under my leadership, the ODM party will remain steadfast in Kasipul, built on unity, respect for one another, and a shared commitment to progress. Our strength lies not in division, but in our ability to move forward together with a clear purpose."
