Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has promised that Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) students will receive financial support from the government via the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

Kindiki made this announcement during the 2025 KMTC graduation ceremony held at Kasarani Stadium on Thursday, December 4, 2025.

In his address, Kindiki stated that he will engage key personnel in the ministries of health, treasury and education to ensure that a proper funding model for the KMTC students is put in place.

"I will be convening relevant ministries in the state departments next week to agree on a formula and how we can start supporting KMTC students to access funding," he stated.

He further emphasized that the government’s plan aims to provide access to funding, recognizing that not every parent can afford to pay for education at the institution.

The difference between KMTC funding and the new university HELB model lay in how the support was structured.

The Afya Elimu Fund, which KMTC students rely on, operates purely as a loan, meaning all the money awarded must be repaid with 4% annual interest after graduation.

In contrast, the university model combined a government scholarship with a loan component. Students placed through KUCCPS were assessed using the Means Testing Instrument (MTI) to determine their financial need.

Depending on the assessment, university students receive a scholarship covering 30% to 70% of their tuition, significantly reducing the amount they must repay after completing their studies.

The deputy president also noted that there was a shortage of lecturers at KMTC campuses.

He vowed to engage the relevant ministry to ensure that more lecturers were deployed to support education in a bid to ensure that the country has enough professional health workers to turbocharge the universal health workers program.

The DP also highlighted that the government of Kenya had an initiative called "Kazi kwa Ground" that would ensure all students get jobs in Kenya and the "Kazi Majuu Program" that ensured Kenyan professionals secured jobs abroad.
