The government has announced major changes within the leadership of the National Police Service (NPS), with former Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei being appointed the Director of the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons.
According to the changes made on Thursday, the former Nairobi police boss will replace Jacinta Muthoni, who retired from the position after years of service.
Until his new role, Bungei served as the Director of Operations at police headquarters, Vigilance House.
At the same time, Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati was moved to the Central Region, while Samuel Ndanyi was posted to in Rift Valley, effectively swapping the two leadership positions.
Paul Wambugu, who was previously the officer in charge at Isiolo, has been transferred to the National Police Leadership Academy in Ngong, according to police headquarters officials.
Isaac Sang, who had been overseeing sports at Vigilance House, will now serve in Isiolo, taking over Wambugu’s previous role.
Additionally, Tom Okoth has been appointed the new officer in charge of sports at Vigilance House as part of the steps towards enhancing operations at the service.
The changes come amid government plans to introduce key reforms within the service, among them the transition to electric vehicles or the police.
At the same time, according to President William Ruto, the government will purchase 3,000 police vehicles to improve efficiency, up from the planned 1,200 units.
Besides police vehicles, Ruto also revealed plans from the government to construct 900 police stations in the next two years, which the government intends to achieve through utilising the NG-CDF to construct 300 stations.
A further 300 stations would be facilitated using the government's housing program, while another 300 would be constructed through the Interior Ministry.
In addition, all police officers are set to for promoted by at least one rank by June 1, 2026, including those officers who have clocked the age of 50 and are still in the constable rank.
