The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has sacked 127 out of the 904 traffic police officers who were vetted on suitability to continue with their work.
The affected police officers were drawn from different ranks ranging from Chief Inspector to constables.
NPSC Chairman Johnston Kavuludi revealed that those dismissed from the service were found to have huge financial transactions that could not be justified.
The vetting commission established that some of the officers were sending and receiving money from fellow officers in the traffic department, operating matatu business, receiving money from transporters and operators of breakdown services and other forms of professional misconduct.
The vetting process was carried out from May and was undertaken in Coast, Western, Rift Valley and Nyanza regions.
Of those sacked, 36 are from Coast, 23 from Western, 50 from Rift Valley and 18 from Nyanza region.
Apart from the 127, the Kavuludi–led commission is also investigating 72 more officers while another 26 officers opted to retire rather than face the vetting panel.
The vetting commission has also assured members of the public that measures have been put in place to monitor those removed from the service to ensure they don’t engage in crime.
The next stage of the vetting has already started and will be undertaken in Kajiado, Nairobi, Central, Eastern and North Eastern regions.
