Presidential Aspirant Senator Kennedy Okong'o Mong'are to Pursue Nyamira Governorship

Presidential hopeful Kennedy Okong'o Mong'are, who quit the race to State House about two weeks ago, is back on the political field and will now be contesting for Nyamira Governorship.

Mr Mong'are, who is also the Nyamira County Senator, has picked Ms Immaculate Okangi, a 25-year-old former hotelier, as his running-mate.

While seeking clearance from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to vie for governorship, the Senator conveyed that he had chosen to step down from the Presidential race in order to pursue a seat he was certain of clinching.

"I am sure of clinching the governorship seat and (I’ll) set standards before seeking a bigger office," he told journalists.

Mong'are intimated that the presidency was his dream job and his desire to one day be president remained intact.

The Senator first announced his interest to contest for the presidency in December of last year stating that: "Kenya needs change and I am that change."

He would two months later make a shocking confession of his bhang use at the Senate while arguing in favour of a petition to legalise bhang in Kenya.

"It doesn't mean that if the plant is legalised, it will destroy lives. It depends on with the level of indulgence. As a juvenile, I used it. I was also in India where the plant is legalised but it is vital if people are disciplined. You can choose not to use it," Mong'are confessed.

The Senator will now battle it out with Dr James Gesami, Dr Erneo Nyakiba, Dr Apoko Kumenda, former Judge David Onyancha and Mr Walter Nyambati to oust incumbent John Nyangarama.
