Security Mistakes Committed by Kenyan Presidential Guards

The President is believed to be the most guarded man in a country with dozens of highly-trained security officers and hawk-eyed marksmen following him wherever he goes.

Nonetheless, in Kenya, there have been instances where the President's security got breached despite an elite team being on standby to ensure no unauthorised persons would get close to the most powerful man on the land.

Here are some of the most daring incidents that happened under the watch of the presidential guard:

1. An Eight-Year-old Sneaking up to the President

Back in the 80s, when former President Daniel Arap Moi was the Head of State, an eight-year-old boy, Bethuel Mbugua, shocked many when he dodged the security and walked straight to the President during a fundraiser at Kijabe hospital.

The boy, who was seeking financial assistance, went ahead to speak to the Head of State with the guards only noticing him after he had the attention of President Moi.

When the bodyguards attempted to chase the boy, Deputy President Mwai Kibaki intervened stating that the child had also brought his contribution.

2. Man who walked and sat next to President Kibaki

Fredrick Odhiambo made history during former President Mwai Kibaki's tenure after he walked up to two rows behind the president unnoticed and sat for two hours.

Mr Odhiambo sat on a seat reserved for Ministers and interacted with senior government officials without being noticed until he mistakenly heckled. The embarrassed presidential guards quickly surrounded him beat him up and threw him out of the dias after which he was taken to hospital with soft tissue injuries.

He (Odhiambo) noted that he planned his mission for three days and only wanted to tell President Kibaki to ask legislators to pay tax.

3. Man who sat between two presidents

In 2003, President Daniel Moi and president-elect Mwai Kibaki met at the funeral of the first wife to former Minister Njenga Karume and a man sat between them.

No one asked a question because both security teams thought he was an aide to either of the presidents. In actual sense, he was just a random guy who saw an empty seat and simply sat down.

He sat in the VIP tent, between Moi and Kibaki, for hours before anyone started asking questions.

4. The Wandering Tourist

A tourist mistakenly strayed into State House grounds and had ventured some 100 meters in the premises before anyone noticed him.

He was in the neighbouring grounds, and saw a big house and decided to walk towards it. The tourist only noticed that he was in the wrong area after he was confronted by State House police.

5. Man Sneaking Into State House

A man called Onyango Mono made history during President Moi's era after he sneaked into State House by conning guards at the front gate.

Mr Mono reportedly walked around the State House premises and was only found in the morning lying on a carpet.

What happened to him after he was found is still unclear but he was later released.
