Nation Journalists Philip Ochieng' and Brian Tetley were Given Crate of Beer to Write Story of Tom Mboya's Assassination

The assassination of veteran politician Thomas Joseph Odhiambo, famously known as Tom Mboya, in 1969 dominated headlines across major news agencies for months even after his funeral.

A little-known story of the journalists assigned to cover the beat would emerge years later in 1996 when one of them, Mr Brian Tetley, died.

Mr Tetley and Philip Ochieng', then Daily Nation journalists, are said to have been locked in a room and given a crate of beer with strict instructions not to leave until they had finished writing the assassination story.

Both journalists had a knack for drinking that saw Mr Tetley marry several times at his favourite entertainment spot in Nairobi that was called Starlight Night Club.

Tetley, who also worked at the Standard, would dramatically lose his job when he reported to the office late in the afternoon after a night of drinking.

"His superiors were not amused. Peter Welham, the editorial director, summoned him to his office and gave him a dressing down and threatening to take further action on the journalist.

"Brian had other thoughts on the matter. There was no need to wait. 'Mi kwenda (I'm gone)!' he shouted as he left Welham's office," read part of an article eulogising him.

The journalist died after an Ethiopian Airlines plane heading to Nairobi was hijacked by terrorists and crashed into the Indian Ocean near the Comoros Islands.

His friends placed several beer bottles in his coffin as he was buried.
