4 Kenyans Die in Fatal Drowning Incident at Lake Victoria

Four people were Monday morning found dead after drowning in Lake Victoria.

A man, his wife and six-month-old baby are among the four who lost their lives after the boat they were travelling in capsized near Sirongo beach in Siaya County.

A Form Three student of Gobei Secondary School was the fourth victim in the incident.

According to Nyang’oma assistant chief Michael Osare, the deceased were sailing in a canoe along with four other relatives who were rescued by fishermen in the incident.

They had reportedly gone to visit a family member on Sifu Island and were on their way back home.

The assistant chief disclosed that the boat split into two before capsizing, with the survivors holding on to the wreckage until the fishermen reached them.

The infant's body, which was taken to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary, was retrieved immediately and the mother's at about 4am on Monday.

The other two bodies have not yet been found.

Speculation surrounds the circumstances that led to the fatal accident as some suspect that the boat may have been overloaded while others assert that safety rules were ignored.

According to police statistics, in the least, one person dies daily in the lake in one of three countries that share the resource as boat accidents are rampant in the basin.
