DPP Keriako Tobiko Orders Release of Nation Media Group Sunday Nation Editor Walter Menya

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Keriako Tobiko has ordered the release Nation Media Group Journalist Walter Menya on free bond.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DPP further ordered that Menya's file be forwarded to him for further directions.

On Monday, the High Court ruled that the journalist be detained for a day until Tuesday evening, to allow police officers take fingerprints and phone details.

Menya was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday morning where police asked for three more days to complete investigations into the bribery claims leveled against him.

Police also claimed that they needed additional time to recover more materials on the story the editor wrote.

During the court session, Menya's accuser was identified as Kiprotich Koros.

On Sunday, National Police Spokesman George Kinoti stated that Menya was arrested for demanding money from an unnamed politician on several occasions.

"He has been demanding money on several occasions to kill the alleged story. At different times, he has received Sh35,000 through Mpesa and today he was arrested receiving Sh20,000," Kinoti said in a statement.

The Nation Media Group, however, disclosed that he was arrested for writing a story that implicated civil servants active in Friends of Jubilee Foundation, an organization backing President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election bid in the Sunday Nation.
