The Standard Gauge Railways (SGR) Inter-County Trains Service Fares To Start At Sh50

Kenya Railways has announced that it will introduce the Inter-County train service where passengers will pay a minimum of Sh50.

The service, which is scheduled to start in July, will allow passengers to alight and board the SGR trains at various stopovers between Nairobi and Mombasa.

Kenya Railways Managing Director,  Atanas Maina stated that passengers travelling on the economy class would pay Sh50 from Mombasa to Mariakani, Sh230 from Voi to Kibwezi, Sh160 from Athi River to Emali, Sh510 from Nairobi to Voi and Sh400 from Emali to Miasenyi.

Passengers opting to travel on First Class would pay Sh140 from Mombasa to Mariakani, Sh920 from Voi to Kibwezi, Sh660 from Athi River to Emali, Sh2,130 from Nairobi to Voi and Sh1,670 from Emali to Miasenyi.

He added that the inter-county trains will make nine stopovers at Mariakani, Miasenyi, Voi, Mtito Andei, Kibwezi, Emali and Athi River terminus once they start operating.

“We will have a train leaving Nairobi at 8 am in the morning and another leaving Mombasa at the same time. The Mombasa train will stop at the stations taking five and a half hours,” Maina explained.

The Inter-County Trains are meant to supplement the existing Madaraka Express trains which have been departing at 9 am daily, offering a non-stop connection between Nairobi and Mombasa.

The low prices of SGR tickets have made the trains popular among travellers between Nairobi and Mombasa, with a total of 34,808 passengers having used the train in the first half of June.

After the announcement that Monday 26th June would be a public holiday marking Idd celebrations, it emerged that the Nairobi- Mombasa train had been fully booked as Kenyans have taken the opportunity to unwind at the Coast.
