President Uhuru Kenyatta's Gatundu Backyard Ranked Number 1 in Consumption of Alcohol in Kiambu County

President Uhuru Kenyatta's Gatundu South home area has been ranked number one in the consumption of Alcohol in Kiambu County.

A report released by NACADA on Tuesday revealed that Gatundu South was leading in the consumption of alcohol with the most affected being people aged between 18-65 years.

"Majority of those abusing alcohol are aged between 25 and 35 followed by those aged 18-24. Legal or packaged alcohol is most common followed by second generation alcohol, traditional liquor, and chang'aa," the report read in part.

In the report, Gatundu South also emerged among the top areas in the consumption of cocaine and heroin.

Kikuyu and Juja sub-counties led in the consumption of chang'aa whereas Githunguri and Gatundu North led in the consumption of second generation alcohol.

Thika and Juja sub-counties led in the consumption of miraa whereas Kikuyu and Ruiru led in the consumption of sleeping pills.

Lari, Limuru and Githunguri sub-counties led in the consumption of cigarettes that include; chewed/piped tobacco, kuber and shisha.

Kiambu County Director in charge of alcoholic drinks control, Mr Michael Kangethe, faulted the increased number of drug and substance abuse on residents who do not attend sensitisation meetings.

"We have been on the ground but people do not want to attend meetings. They do not want to give information on who is selling the substances making it difficult [to curb use] since some of the substances are sold in homes," Kangethe stated.

Kiambu residents on their part blamed the increased rate of drug and substance abuse on the growing number of wines and spirits outlets in the county.
