M-Pesa Services to be Disrupted as Safaricom Upgrades to New Platform

M-Pesa services will be interrupted for certain periods of time as Safaricom conducts an upgrade on the platform over the next three weeks.

In this regard, the telecommunications provider has announced that all M-Pesa services will be unavailable for a period of two hours on Friday, June 30, 2017, from 1 am to 3am.

As a result of the upgrade, International Money Transfer (IMT), KCB M-PESA, M-Shwari and M-Kesho services will also be unavailable on July 5, 2017, for a period of two hours, from 1 am to 3 am.

Safaricom has also announced that in mid-July,  they will conduct the lead changeover to the new platform, resulting in a 12-hour outage.

Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore confirmed the upgrade stating that it will pave way for the next phase that will enable customers to get better service delivery.

“Ten years ago, we began the journey of M-PESA by focusing on our customers’ need to send money home. Since then, we have experienced tremendous growth as the platform has grown to provide even more value to the ecosystem.

"This upgrade paves the way for the next phase of M-PESA and will enable the service to deliver even more value for our customers and partners,” Collymore stated.

The new platform is expected to bring on board new features that include M-Shwari and KCB M-PESA implementation in the Safaricom app.

The upgrade is also expected to provide for automation of different M-Pesa procedures that will eliminate the current requirement for customers and merchants to make such requests to the call centre.
