21 Al-Shabaab Killed in Shootout With KDF

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers on Saturday afternoon killed 21 Al-Shabaab militants in a shootout that took place at Afmadow area in Somalia.

The shoot out began after Al-Shabaab fighters ambushed the Kenyan troops, who were heading to Afmadow, leading to a fierce gun battle. During the fight, two Kenyan soldiers were killed while five others were injured.

KDF Spokesman Colonel Obonyo confirmed the incident revealing that the Kenyan troops overpowered the fighters and recovered 19 AK 47 riffles and three rocket propelled grenades (RPGs).

“Regrettably, KDF suffered two fatalities and five injuries. The injured were evacuated and are receiving medical attention,” a statement from Col Obonyo cited.

The Somali-based fighters had planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the road, which exploded on one of the KDF lorries injuring five soldiers.

Last week on Wednesday, the Kenyan troops operating under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), intercepted a night invasion by Al Shabaab, killing 9 militants.

Two weeks ago, US special forces killed more than 150 militants in a drone attack targetting a training camp belonging to the Al -Qaeda linked group.

In mid-January, the terror group ambushed Kenyan camps in El-Adde region leaving more than 150 soldiers dead.
