Machakos County Government Shuts Down 17 Restaurants

The Machakos County Government has shut down 17 restaurants over failure to meet health standards in the wake of a Cholera outbreak in some parts of the country.

The restaurants were closed following an order by District Health Public Officer Zachary Ochonka.

Ochonka stated that the restaurants would reopen if they improved their standards.

“There is no single reported cholera case in Machakos but we are putting adequate measures to ensure our people are safe," Ochonka highlighted.

11 of the closed restaurants are in Kangundo town, four in Kakuyuni and two in Kwa -Akamba market.

Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua directed public health officers to be on high alert.

Speaking in Mwala Constituency, Mutua assured that his government had taken all possible measures to handle the cholera outbreak.

The Governor noted there were drugs, equipment, personnel and an emergency section at Machakos Level 5 Hospital to ensure a quick response.

“Our personnel is ready to ensure our people are safe," Governor Mutua highlighted.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has today named Kisumu, Machakos, Garissa and Nairobi as cholera hot spots saying it has sought help from the World Health Organization in combating spread of the disease.
