Buuri MP Gatobu Kinoti Quits Meru Governor Race

Buuri Member of Parliament Gatobu Kinoti has quit the Meru Governor race four days to the General Election.

Kinoti, who was vying as an independent candidate, stepped down in favour of Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi who is vying for the seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.

The MP made the decision after President Uhuru Kenyatta promised to give him a state job after the coming elections.

"We have agreed that he steps down then we will find a job for him in government. He can then get more experience and when Kiraitu and I retire, he and Ruto can continue with the work," the President stated during his tour of the county on Thursday.

Kiraitu is looking to unseat incumbent Meru Governor Peter Munya who is defending his seat on a PNU ticket.

Kenyatta called on Meru people to avoid taking Miraa matters to court, adding that they should find solutions with the help of their leaders.

"Stop taking matters to court stopping the implementation of miraa reforms. Let's come to the people, discuss the issues with them and solve them here. Taking them to court only delays reforms at the expense of farmers," Uhuru said.

The President's team is expected to hold a rally in Tharaka Nithi County before heading to Kitui.[caption caption="Buuri MP Gatobu Kinoti (in black)"][/caption]
