Two people died on Saturday evening and a dozen others injured after a campaign lorry they were travelling in overturned in Mathira constituency, Nyeri County.

The lorry was in a campaign caravan ferrying Jubilee supporters on a final campaign just a few moments from the official end of the campaign period.

Mathira East police boss Mathews Gwuiyo confirmed the death toll but added that details of the accident were still minimal.

Reports from the Nation, indicate that the vehicle overturned following a tyre bust near Ngandu shopping center.

Sources privy to the accident reported that the vehicle was overloaded and was carrying about 60 passengers some of whom were hanging precariously from the open sided body of the lorry.

The accident caused a lot of damage with some of the victims reportedly thrown several meters away from the scene while others broke their legs and limbs.

“I saw the lorry swerving dangerously as it negotiated a corner, then there was a loud burst, followed by a bang, then wild screams as it turned on its side, some of the people were tossed far from the vehicle,” one of the witnesses stated

The injured Jubilee Party supporters were taken to Mathari and Outspan hospitals in Nyeri town where they are receiving treatment.

It is still unclear which candidate the supporters were campaigning for at the time of the accident.
