The United Nations has declined to accept Opposition Leader Raila Odinga's request for an audit of the August 8 election results.
UN Spokesman Farhan Haq rejected the request echoing Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' recent statement urging Kenyan political leaders to bring election-related disputes to “the relevant constitutionally mandated institutions.”
Mr Haq further noted that the UN would monitor Mr Odinga's next move which he is set to announce on Wednesday.
Last week, the National Super Alliance (NASA) leader requested the UN to analyse the presidential results of the just-concluded 2017 General Election.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Mr Odinga declared that he had compelling evidence indicating that the presidential election was a sham.
"We will show the kind of charade the whole world has been treated to. What we want is the UN to appoint a team of experts to help us with the analysis of the results," he stated.
The Opposition leader further stated that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had been held "under metaphorical gunpoint" by President Uhuru Kenyatta's team.
"With the experience of what happened to Chris Msando they were very frightened," Mr Odinga alluded.
He revealed that he would be releasing details of the alleged compelling evidence on Tuesday, adding that it was needful for Kenyans to know what really happened.
"It is not about me. It’s not about Raila Odinga, I’m not going to be a candidate again. We just want Kenyans to know what happened, what the whole world is not understanding is happening.
"There’s no point people going to elections in the future, queuing for hours to vote, or running around for months campaigning. At the end of the day it’s the computer in the national tallying centre that’s making the decisions," he argued.
Mr Odinga conveyed that his team would not take any legal action to contest the election results announced by the IEBC.
"We don’t want to incur unnecessary expenses to pay the cost of a petition when it’s not decided based on the merits [of the case]," he asserted.
