Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has suspended over 437 county government officials from the finance department.
In a statement issued on Friday, Mutua directed the officers in charge of procurement, accountants, auditors, directors among others to proceed on immediate leave until further notice.
According to the Governor, the workers are not supposed to access Government premises until they are recalled.
He stated that the move is aimed at allowing a thorough independent audit and suitability assessment of staff and financial systems and operations of Machakos County.
“The objective is to ensure that going forward Wananchi get value for money that has been entrusted on us. There is need to improve efficiency root out cartels and enhance accountability and integrity in all levels of my Government,” he stated.
According to the Governor, his decision was part of a comprehensive “radical surgery” informed by his interactions with the residents during the concluded campaigns.
He added that more changes would be made in the next few days assuring that he would ensure Machakos residents receive Government services in a transparent and efficient manner.
“Over 437 staff affected are from both the County Treasury Headquarters as well as those seconded in other Government departments all over the County,” read the statement.
