IEBC Issues New Statement of Sacking of 3 Top Officials

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday night issued a new statement denying reports that three of its top ICT officials had been sent home.

In a tweet, IEBC indicated that the internal memo that confirmed the suspension was leaked and the matter was still under discussion.

The Commission noted that no decision had been reached regarding the three IEBC ICT officials; James Muhati (ICT Director), Paul Mugo (ICT Coordinator) and Boniface Wamae (ICT Officer) as reported on the media.

In the leaked memo to IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba, the Chairman Wafula Chebukati called for action to be taken against Mr Muhati, Mr Mugo and Mr Wamae.

According to Chebukati, the officers appeared to have fallen short of assisting the Commission to successfully deliver a free, fair and credible election.

“The Chairman as the National Returning Officer, therefore, demands that the following officers in the ICT directorate be immediately suspended in accordance with the enabling laws,” part of the memo read.

Chebukati added that the move was necessary to also assert the integrity and fidelity of the Commission to the rule of law and to restore public confidence in the electoral body.

Muhati is among IEBC officials the National Super Alliance (NASA) wants to be sacked over allegations of mismanaging the August General Election.
