IEBC Officials Ignored Warnings - EACC Reveals

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has revealed that IEBC officials ignored warnings against clearing 106 politicians to vie in the August 8 elections.

The anti-corruption agency claims that it had asked IEBC not to clear the politicians due to pending corruption cases that had been lodged against them.

According to EACC Vice Chairperson Sophia Lepuchirit, more than 60% of those implicated were elected as governors, senators, members of parliament and ward representatives.

"During vetting, we blacklisted 106 aspirants starting from governors to MCAs who had integrity issues and even cases with EACC but they were cleared by IEBC," the Vice Chair stated.

Ms Lepuchirit termed the incident as "very serious" conveying that a majority of the elected corrupt leaders are MPs.

She further defended the commission against claims that it was not doing enough to put the corrupt leaders in check, saying that 60 accused county officials are already under investigation.

"We have increased our investigating staff from 350 in 2015 to 700 currently and this will help deal with the high number of complaints we receive that now stands at 61,000, with 21,000 being under various levels of investigation.

"We are doing a lot, we even have a former governor and his 29 officials who are facing charges of abuse of office in court as we speak," she defended.

The EACC boss added that the anti-graft commission had been given authorisation to inspect Integrated Financial Management System (IFMIS) and how counties were withdrawing funds.
