NASA Leader Raila Odinga Makes New Decision on the John Kerry-led Election Observers Group

Opposition Leader Raila Odinga has announced that he has forgiven the Election observers group led by former US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Speaking shortly after meeting representatives from the National Democratic Institute and the Carter Centre, the former Prime Minister noted that he holds no grudge against the team over their endorsement of the August election which was declared null and void by the Supreme Court.

He, however, told the observers to be vigilant in the coming fresh poll and pay keen attention to what the Supreme Court highlighted in its ruling, adding that the observers had a second chance to effectively play their role in the October election.

“We believe in election observation and see it as a critical part of ensuring free and fair polls if the observers focus on the right things.

“In the glowing complements to the IEBC and talking of how Kenya is leading the continent in the path to democratisation despite our protests, the Carter Centre went too far. But to err is human. We just hope it does not happen again,” he highlighted.

The Carter Centre led by John Kerry had submitted that the August poll was well conducted only for the poll to be annulled on grounds of massive irregularities and illegalities.

Mr Odinga used the meeting to stress out the coalition's stand that there will be no election unless IEBC makes urgent changes.

The National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders also called on the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to begin investigating IEBC officials who messed the August elections.

The Opposition coalition noted that if the DPP failed to start the investigations, they will begin private prosecutions.

“We believe IEBC officials are culpable. The Supreme Court spoke of illegalities and irregularities in the polls. Somebody must be punished for it,” he submitted.
