All Kenyans Above 70 Years to Receive Monthly Pay from Government

In a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, Sh6.5 Billion was allocated to finance a plan that will give all Kenyans above 70-years-old a monthly pay.

The beneficiaries of this fund will be all Kenyans above 70 years of age, irrespective of their income level.

Besides the monthly pay, the Kenyans will also receive a free National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) cover.

The pay which will begin in January 2018 is intended to ease the suffering of the elderly Kenyans.

The previous cash transfer project initiated in 2012 targeted individuals above 65 years living in extreme poverty.

Improved healthcare for Kenyans has seen the country's life expectancy rise as most elderly people usually lack a pension scheme.

The life expectancy is usually a challenge for the elderly who live in the urban area where the cost of living is quite high.

According to figures from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, Kenya has approximately 774,000 people aged 70 and above.

A report done in 2015 by the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates life expectancy in Kenya at 63.
