COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli Speaks on Being CS in Uhuru's Government

Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli was on Wednesday asked whether he would accept the position of a Cabinet Secretary in President Uhuru Kenyatta's Government.

During an interview on the Jeff Koinange Live (JKL) show,  Mr Atwoli stated that he would not accept the position as it is beneath him.

"I am a celebrated Labour movement official in the World. Becoming a CS would be lowering my standards. If I was handed the position of a CS, I would ask the president to give the position to one of my children," he declared.

Mr Atwoli, however, stated that he would be willing to offer consultation services to the government for free.

The long-serving trade unionist added that even the position of the governor was not suited for his ambitions if he decided to venture into politics.

Mr Atwoli blamed Uhuru's lawyers particularly Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia for the loss in the presidential election petition stating that the lawyer's advanced age affected his ability to conclusively present his case.

"What Ngatia should be doing now is being a judge having young lawyers advising him rather than arguing in court. While I was listening to the submissions from both sides, NASA's legal team was made up of young brilliant lawyers," he conveyed.

Asked about the Odinga succession politics, Mr Atwoli expressed confidence that Siaya Senator James Orengo would replace Opposition Leader Raila Odinga when he (Raila) retires from politics.

“After Raila it will be Orengo. He had been accepted by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga so he is on the right path of taking over Luo politics,” he explained.
