New Development on Death of Public Works PS

The body of Public Works Principal Secretary (PS) Mariam El Maawy, who died on Wednesday while receiving treatment in South Africa, will be flown into the country today.

According to the family spokesperson, Mr Mohammed Ali, the body is scheduled to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday evening and will be received by relatives.

He further noted that Ms Maawy will be laid to rest at Lang'ata cemetry after Friday prayers.

Ms Maawy was recovering at the Milpark hospital after she was shot and injured by Al Shabaab militants at Milihoi area along the Mpeketoni-Lamu Road in July.

The PS and five others were ambushed by the militants while travelling to Witu area in Lamu County.

The gunmen are said to have opened fire at the hostages upon noticing they were being pursued by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers.

Maawy was shot in the shoulder and leg while three people perished after suffering serious injuries.

President Uhuru Kenyatta mourned the PS as a dedicated public servant, an accomplished architect and a patriot.
