Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has issued a new demand to National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday after a failed meeting between NASA and Jubilee representatives, Mr Chebukati noted that the presidential aspirants should attend future IEBC meetings in person.
"Next time we want the principals to come in person. We don't want generals to cause sideshows here ahead of the election...we must meet sooner rather than later," he stated.
The IEBC boss, however, maintained that the electoral body is open for engagement with the presidential hopefuls when they are ready.
"IEBC doors are open to engaging anyone," he said. "Hopefully, they will reconsider and come back to us. We will not get tired of engaging parties."
The talks on the repeat presidential election collapsed at the Bomas of Kenya after the NASA delegation led by Senator James Orengo walked out to protest the introduction of amendments to Election laws by Jubilee legislators.
Senator James Orengo noted that the bill as tabled in Parliament will affect the preparation and the conduct of the fresh elections.
"We cannot be party to a meeting that is changing the rules of the game midstream. This is part of the arrogance of the ruling regime," Mr Orengo said.
Mr Chebukati warned Parliamentarians against passing amendments that will alter the ongoing preparations.
"While it is the role of Parliament to make laws, it is the commission’s view that the amendments should not affect the process that has already been put in place," the IEBC Chair said.
Speaking at Wiper Party Headquarters in Lavington on Thursday afternoon, Raila stated: "The Jubilee government is on the offensive and they are trying to reverse all the gains our people have made."
"They are trying to change the electoral system to one worse than what we had before 1997," he added.
