KCSE Candidate Shot Dead During NASA's Anti-IEBC Demonstrations

A form four student in Kondele, Kisumu was shot dead on Monday as NASA supporters took to the streets to protest demanding reforms in the IEBC.

Police were forced to use teargas cannisters in an attempt to disperse the large crowd which had set tyres on fire and blocked roads.

During the incident, 18-year-old Michael Okoth is said to have been shot in the neck and succumbed to the injuries shortly after.

Caroline Okello, the student's mother, claimed that he had gone to buy ice cream from a nearby vendor when the demonstrations started in the city.

“I told him not to go out today because of the demonstrations but he insisted on going to buy ice cream,” the mother lamented.

According to Ms Okello, the Form Four student at Vihiga High School had been sent home due to school fees arrears.

A protester who witnessed the incident alleged that he had seen police officers gun down a young man.

“He was running away to hide from the police. A policeman pointed a gun at him and shot him from a distance. He got shot in the neck,” he claimed.

According to a report by Nation, Kisumu police boss Titus Yoma declined to confirm if in deed the boy died from bullet wounds or he was shot at all.

A human rights group has in the past stated that 37 people could have died in the immediate aftermath of the August 8 election that was annulled by the Supreme Court.
