There Will Be No Election in Mombasa - Joho Declares

Mombasa County leaders have declared that there will be no presidential election in the county on October 26th.

Led by Governor Ali Hassan Joho and his Deputy William Kingi, they noted that the resignation of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Roselyn Akombe had vindicated their dismissal of the upcoming poll as a sham.

Deputy Governor Kingi stated: "Our supporters know the commission does not have the capacity to hold a credible poll.

"Her (Akombe) statement shows IEBC will conduct a sham election. It will just be rendered null and void," Kingi added.

When reached for comment, Governor Joho's Communications Director Richard Chacha confirmed that Kingi's statement was the official position of the Governor and the Mombasa county government.

Mr Kingi further noted that supporters were aware of the decision and were fully behind it.

"We have massive support. The message has been made clear - no reforms no election - and supporters have responded in affirmative," he declared.

Akombe announced her resignation from the electoral body on Wednesday morning in a statement sent from New York.

It read in part: "The Commission in its current state can surely not guarantee a credible election on 26 October 2017. I do not want to be party to such a mockery to electoral integrity."

IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati issued his own statement a few hours later confirming the commission was deeply divided and issued a warning to key political players to strike a compromise for the sake of the country.
