IEBC Adds Another Presidential Candidate to October 26 Election

Presidential Candidate Cyrus Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo will be on the ballot for the October 26 election.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Abdi Guliye on Tuesday stated that the former Lugari Member of Parliament appealed his omission and the electoral body was bound to add his name to the ballot paper.

Mr Jirongo was declared bankrupt by Commercial Court Judge Olga Sewe who found that he was unable to pay his debts. The judge ordered that Jirongo’s estate be placed under the receivership of his creditor Mr Sammy Kogo.

Jirongo was granted permission by Mr Kogo to use his properties to secure a loan from National Bank but failed to repay the lender.

Judge Sewe found that he was unable to pay Sh700 Million that he owed eight companies. This meant that Mr Jirongo, who vied for the Presidency in the August 8 General Election, could not run for the position since a bankrupt person cannot hold public office.

The changes have been made despite an announcement that ballot papers for the repeat presidential poll are expected in the country by Saturday night.

Dubai-based Al Ghurair printing firm stated that it had already finished printing 18 million papers translating to 90 percent of the job.

According to the firm, the ballot papers will have few changes compared to those used in the August 8 election. The papers will be grey in colour and their serial numbers start with 30,000,000.

According to Al Ghurair, they have completed printing all Forms 34A and 34B with an increased focus on the documents whose discrepancies led to the annulment of the August 8 presidential poll.

There are slightly over 19 million voters but due to block printing and the need to cater for spoilt ballot papers, close to 20 million papers will be delivered for the election.
