Nairobi Highway Blocked

Kangundo-Nairobi highway has been blocked after three matatu Saccos engaged in turf wars on Monday morning.

The three Public Service Saccos namely KAM transporters, Makata and Eastern Bypass Travellers Investment (EBTI) blocked the road at Joska section of the busy road.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a representative from KAM Sacco confirmed the reports of the blockage but declined to comment on the reason for the confrontation.

The three groups have been at loggerheads since April, 2017 when KAM and Makata Saccos downed their tools protesting the allocation of the EBTI sacco with a permit to carry passengers from the Kangundo Bus terminal.

The two Saccos jointly raised concerns over the alleged assault of their staff from the EBTI Sacco.

Makata chairperson Duncan Mbithi claimed that the Sacco had hired goons who physically assaulted and chased their members from the designated stage at Caltex in Umoja.

"Our members have been physically assaulted and chased away from Caltex in Umoja where they pick passengers by goons hired by the EBTI Sacco and we had a meeting with their representatives and the Chief Officer and we agreed that they would send away the goons before we decide to share the Kangundo Bus terminal with them," Mr Mbithi stated.

KAM Sacco chairperson Langi Muthiani added that they would not allow EBTI to pick passengers at the Kangundo Bus Terminal until the Caltex issue was sorted out.

"We are reading mischief from the Chief Officer and Kangundo and Matungulu sub-county administrators for issuing a letter to EBTI Sacco allocating them space at the Kangundo Bus terminal, which is against the Machakos agreement," he claimed.
